Stop Motion Animation - Ideas generation
I decided, after doing research and trying out various different styles of animation, that I like cut out animation the best and it seemed the most simple and effective choice.
In order to do some more research into my chosen style of animation, I took to youtube in search of some low budget/non-professional cut-out animations. This would hopefully give me a more realistic look at what was going to be achievable for me.
And then I had a look at animator and Monty Python member Terry Gilliam's work on cut out animation. His animations are simple but very effective, and humour can be created by the sheer absurdity and abstract nature of the characters/animation style. I used this as the majority of my inspiration for my own cut out animation.
At this point I decided I wanted to use Terry Gilliam's abstract and surreal humour, but tied in with a politically motivated and satirical theme. As the UK general election was coming up, I thought of perhaps spoofing a party political broadcast.
First, I created a simple background using a scene of a house from a home living magazine.
I then looked through newspapers and magazines in order to find a picture of David Cameron's head, which I put onto a mismatched body, giving him a sort of hunchback look.
For the final character and prop, I chose a strange illustrated character to represent UKIP party leader Nigel Farrage. I pictured him holding a crudely made "Vote UKIP" sign and holding Cameron's head.
The basic story was that I would start off with Cameron dancing on moving around in some way, and then have the little Farrage character appear holding his head, before throwing it off stage. I wanted to find music which would not fit with a typical party political broadcast, something jarring and loud. I chose the below track for its hectic noise.
Finally, I put titles and credits into my animation, explaining that it was a party political broadcast for UKIP.
Here is my finished animation:
